The seeds are saved from year to year and also handed down in the family. When I was a child (I'm almost 64) my Mamaw kept hers in the corners and we used them as seats. They were huge, sometimes 3 ft. tall and at least 18 inches in diameter at the base. Some of them were all white and shaped like a pumpkin (maybe 24 inches round), but most were the green & white striped, long necked variety, shown in the pictures here. The flesh is orangey and the neck is solid-no seeds. They were so hard to cut, we had to hammer an ax into it cut through the hull! I can only find smaller cushaws with the gourds at Kroger and Walmart. They are a winter squash and keep well in a cool dry place.SpinninJennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07056320499497920109noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1516372996922684463.post-27654728126490354742013-10-17T17:17:08.380-04:002013-10-17T17:17:08.380-04:00My mother used to make wonderful Kershaw (Cushaw) ...My mother used to make wonderful Kershaw (Cushaw) pies. They said the name in their native tongue and when asked what that translated to they replied, "Squash!" So they named it Supai Squash. Too funny!
I found out from the superintendent of agriculture at our county fair that it is a Mexican Cushaw. It looks just like the Cushaw on the right in your picture.
It was a bear to cut! My 10 daughter said it smells like a cantaloupe mixed with a pumpkin.
I plan to toast some of the seeds and save some for planting in the Spring.
I can hardly wait to cook it and make pie with it for Thanksgiving in 2 days.
Happy Thanksgiving!Heart of Azhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04448875669311863019noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1516372996922684463.post-84159749443658425792011-07-16T23:58:54.746-04:002011-07-16T23:58:54.746-04:00We live in southwest Missouri and planted a few cu...We live in southwest Missouri and planted a few cushaw green stripe squash and they are going crazy! This is the easiest squash I've ever grown besides yellow neck. We had to pick one that got deformed and tonight we ate it grilled with hamburger and green beans from the garden. It was delicious! If you can't find the green cushaw anywhere, grow it yourself. It's fun and very satisfying to eat what you grow. We are definately growing this again!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1516372996922684463.post-12168713391458549072010-11-18T12:14:34.200-05:002010-11-18T12:14:34.200-05:00Glad I stumbled upon your blog (thanks google!). Baking the squash yourself, reminds me of a neighbor years ago who did that. Only she baked the seeds and stringy stuff and threw the pulp in the garbage.
